I'm a retired RN who worked in Public Health for 18 years. I'm accustomed to being on the front lines during public health incidents, so it felt odd not doing anything. I figured I could at least make masks for people in my community. (As an aside: I have letters addressed to my grandmother and great grandmother from the U.S. Army during World War I, thanking them for socks and hats they knitted for servicemen overseas, along with the knitting instructions. I figured if my grandmothers helped in that way, I should now try to carry on the family tradition....)I ran out of elastic and most stores that carry it were either out of it or closed due to shelter-in-place restrictions, so I had to improvise with ribbon and elastic thread for some of the masks. (I read recently that, nation-wide, elastic is the new toilet paper ...) I had lots of material on hand from other sewing projects I had worked on or never started, and this was a great way to put it to use. I've made over 100 masks in about two weeks. I really wanted to contribute somehow. As noted above, I'm a retired nurse and feel some responsibility to help. I know my fellow nurses who are still in the workforce are working so hard right now. Masks are in short supply for health care workers, so the masks I'm making are for members of the public. Also, as noted above, my grandmother and great grandmother knitted socks and hats for servicemen overseas in World War I, and I wanted to continue that tradition.
