I am newer to Missoula - came here is 2018 to run the International Wildlife Film Festival and work for The Roxy Theater. We were planning our 43rd film festival for April 18-25 and on March 16th made the decision to take the festival online. Carrie Richer, 41 years old Artistic Director of IWFF This may be too much info - for that I am sorry :) Documenting COVID-19 in Missoula County: A Community Archive ProjectApril 30, 2020 IWFF 2020 will go down in the history books! With a three week warning to pivot from an in-person to a virtual film festival - we embraced the opportunity to reach IWFF audiences in new ways. The response from our community near and far was overwhelmingly positive. We are so grateful for the support from our beloved Missoula community, from filmmaker friends from all over the world, and from the new fans who found us online! We enjoyed hearing from so many of you who never before have watched so many IWFF films. We found many of our pass sales from other states were due to people who had lived in Missoula previously and were involved in the festival. They were so appreciative of being able to feel like they were part of this special Springtime Missoula tradition. All in all - we sold 1600 IWFF Virtual Passes to the festival and are proud to have made the sliding scale prices work to increase accessibility for all. We sold Virtual Passes in 47 states and 25 different countries. We had 11 live events that provided interactive opportunities to hear from filmmakers and special guests on many different platforms and our email list doubled in size. We counted 49,262 total views of the 77 films that were available and 53 of those films were offered for free! Thank you to everyone who took a moment to join us during the first-ever Virtual IWFF. Perhaps next year when the 44th year of IWFF comes around, there will be an opportunity to enjoy the films both at our home, The Roxy Theater, and also in the cloud. Special shout out to our insanely adaptable and inventive staff!
