Anya Jabour, Professor of History, UM, age 50These images (labeled and dated) are both from walks that I took during the shelter-in-place order. I was interested to see how most people complied with the ""social distance"" guidelines of a six-foot distance between individuals in the parks system, since I use it almost daily for exercise. The first image is from the trail by the Clark Fork, near the Orange Street bridge, and the second is from Bonner Park. Both show people interacting from what, at least at the time, was believed to be a safe distance. Not documented here: I also observed a family of 5 (possibly 6) at Bonner Park. Despite the signs advising that the playground was closed, 2-4 children were playing on the equipment. Another woman, walking her dog, criticized the parents for allowing their children to use the playground (from 6 feet away). She stated that she had a family member who was a doctor and that it was unsafe for them to allow their children to play there. The parents became very angry with her for interfering, and they argued heatedly for several minutes. Eventually the woman with the dog moved on, saying that she would call the police. I'm not sure if she did, but I did notice an increased police presence at the park afterward, and I have not seen children using the play equipment since then (I live kitty corner from the park so I have a lot of chances to look over and see and hear what's going on there).
